My first surfing competition!

My first Surfing competition!

My first Surfing competition!

Well the birthday boy made it home safe and sound…or should I say safe and round! Went down to Huntington  Beach for my 55th birthday and had a blast….I spent most of my time in restaurants trying out the food from the Southern culture…One of the reasons I went to huntington beach was to live out a dream I had about surfing at the huntington beach Pier on my 55th.  Driving down to So Cal in our convertible was a lot of fun…we stopped in Carmel to pick-up some of Jane’s new art….Did you know you can still buy a home for only a Million dollars in Carmel…Yup a 2 bedroom 1 bath around 900 Sq. Ft. bungalow.  It was a hot sunny day and we had the top down and were enjoying life…Well if you have been following out trips lately…you know what happens next…yea….black clouds and rain…A few people in Carmel recognized us and asked us to leave town when they saw the clouds coming….So we left…about 2 or 3 miles out of town we pulled over real quick and put up the top…..Rain, Rain ,Rain….Cold rain….heater on… top up and heading to the beaches.. to the land of the sun.  You got it….Rained all the way down and when we got to huntington beach….Cold, oh so Cold.  A miracle happened the next day…we woke up and I believe the weather God’s didn’t know we were there….It was sunny and a little bit warm.. Have you ever bought a hotel on-line?  Well I left the reservations to my daughter and Jane….So when I read where we would be staying I only saw…. Beach Street.. Now if you are like me you would assume that you would be by the beach….NOT…how about 5 miles from the beach…now if I’m going to the beach for 3 days…I would like to be by the beach……So I went online and got to priceline…..I put in a bid to stay at a four star hotel for the next couple of nights and for a room at the Hyatt In Newport that costs almost $300 a night I got it for $100…..We left the Beach hotel without even telling them we wouldn’t be there for the next couple nights. I called my son who lives in Newport and told him he could stay at the rooms we had rented and him and his girl did. I was in Heaven….Close to the Pacific Coast Highway full service and high dollar hotel and now I’m happy. OK so the first night there I am eating at a local restaurant and I meet this guy who told me he was a great surfer and I tell him my dream of surfing on my birthday…He say’s hey Dude…I’ll take you out tomorrow…and so I get all excited…I say hey Dude that would be totally cool…he says…Dude we are going to have a blast…I say dude I can hardly wait. He calls me in the morning and say’s Dude I can’t make it today but, we can hit the waves the next day.. I say hae dude that would be great and guess what….he doesn’t call me…so the next day some friends and I are having dinner and he shows up and tells me Dude I’m sorry.. and say’s Dude I’ll pick you up at 7:30. So I’m all excited and I say dude that would be great and so I’m sitting out in front of the hotel in the morning and now it’s 8:00 and I get a call…..Dude I’m so sorry…someone parked behind me and I can’t get my car out…so dude call your son have him pick you up and come to huntington beach and we will pack the boards up from my garage and hit the waves. I call my son to come pick me up and he shows up in his work van and we drive off. We get to huntington beach and now the surfer Dude won’t answer his phone…I have no idea where this idiot lives and it’s a good thing cause all I want to do is smash his face and now I’m totally bummed…My son and I go down to the water and watch the surfers and a beach shop opens and I see the board of my dreams for rent…about 5 inches thick and about 11 feet long and bright blue….I’m in Heaven…I tell my kid what the heck let’s go for it and I get on the wet suit and head out to catch the big one. Headed out to there weren’t to many surfers around…as I was paddling out I was just trying not to die…the waves were really huge…really…a few of them came crashing down on me and I ended up back at the beach…as I was laying there my son comes up to help me and I tell him I really don’t want to go anymore and I’m exhausted. I tell him that I write the stories and I can make up a good one cause I already went out and paddled around. He says no let’s go do it and I agree. So we avoid going towards the pier cause there are about a million surfers around it. So looking at the whole scene I decide to paddle out to where there were only a few people surfing. I paddled out to the big ones and every wave almost kills me and I get to where I am going and no one was around except a few dudes.  I finally felt safe, but I was totally exhausted and worn out. As I was paddling out into a wave trying to avoid getting killed a guy catches the  wave and is coming right at me and yells at me and says…what the hell are you doing? You.@##$@!#$$$%…so I yell back…%$#@!%$…and then another surfer comes down the next wave towards me and he starts swearing at me and now I’m pissed and yelling back at him and flipping him off. All I am trying to do is not get crushed by these great big waves. I paddle up over the next huge wave and I see another 2 guys who are yelling at me and now I am totally pissed off and thinking what a bunch of asses what do they think…..do they own the waves down here or what……..and then my world…not the waves came crashing down on me…From the beach which I haven’t been able to look back at because of trying to stay alive and go over all the waves…..I hear over a very loud loudspeaker…Sir what are you doing? I hear it again Sir what are you doing? You are in the middle of a surfing competition.. could you get out of the area please! I balance myself on the board and I look towards the beach and see a bunch of Budweiser tents and radio station tents and towers and ESPN tents and cameras and T.V. station tents and tons of people standing and staring out to the waves and the surfers I am with and I realize I have blown it bad. The guy comes back on the horn and says.. start paddling away from the area…so I start to paddle as hard as I can and I am going no where….then he says.. not that way…that’s against the current and you will be in our way all day…turn your board around and so us a favor and paddle towards Long Beach…so I turn around and now I’m paddling really hard to get away and then he comes back on the horn for one last dig.. and say’s why don’t you do us all a big favor here on the beach and paddle all the way to Long Beach. My son comes up and says hey did those guys yell at you and I tell him what was going on and we laugh. We paddle in and when we are going by all the people we walk fast and keep looking towards the competition so nobody will recognize us. You know it was pretty weird and very embarrassing but, all I can say is…I was in my first surf competition and probably on ESPN at the age of 55.  Surfs up Dude!
